Disk space leak on first rollback of btrfs filesystem

This document (7016367) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12

Situation

After the first rollback, disk space does not get freed up automatically as the original root filesystem is not accessible below /.snapshots but still occupies space.

Resolution

The disk space can be freed by following these steps:
  • Mount the initial root filesystem after a rollback with
    mount /dev/<root> -o subvol=@ /mnt
  • Remove all files below /mnt that are not in a subvolume with
    find /mnt -xdev -delete
  • Umount the filesystem again with
    umount /mnt

Cause

Additional Information

The issue only occurs after the first rollback, later rollbacks will free up space automatically.
