ISDN fails to initialize on SLE11SP2

This document (7008372) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 2
SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 11 Service Pack 2

Situation

The ISDN service fails to initialize after updating to SLES11SP1. Checking /var/log/boot.msg, the following error is experienced:

Setting up ISDN card contr0 AVM C4done
Loading Driver contr0 1 kcapi capidone
Initializing capi for contr0 (1)failed

Using strace to monitor the /etc/init.d/isdn startup script the trace shows:

4274  open("/dev/capi20", O_RDWR)       = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)
4274  open("/dev/isdn/capi20", O_RDWR)  = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)
4274  write(2, "ERROR: cannot open /dev/capi20 n"..., 84) = 84
4274  exit_group(-1)

Resolution

Solution:

This update includes a set of RPM packages which depends on the hardware architecture (e.g. -32bit packages forx86_64). Please update capi4linux to version 2012.5.31-0.2.6. YaST2 / zypper will make sure to install the appropriate dependencies.

To locate the updates on our website, go to https://download.novell.com/patch/finder/, then select SLES11SP2 as product and navigate down to "ISDN for Linux 6728" released on Sep 13th 2012.

Workaround:

Edit /etc/udev/rules.d/45-isdn.rules and move the entries from line 4

KERNEL=="capi*",                NAME="capi/%n"

one line up so they precede the line:

KERNEL=="capi",                 NAME="capi20", SYMLINK+="isdn/capi20"
