Restoring UEFI boot Entries

This document (7006718) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 15
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11

Situation

UEFI boot entries can accidentally be lost. And then SLES will not boot automatically.

Resolution

Take the following steps to restore the UEFI boot entries:

  1. Enter the system UEFI menu as the system is starting up.
  2. Go through the UEFI boot manager menu to select the elilo.efi (SLES11) file to boot from.

Another method by booting the system from SLES 12/15 DVD and selecting "Boot from HDD", the DVD will scan for EFI bootloader on HDD and will system will be able to boot normally.

After SLES boots up, open a terminal, type 'yast2 bootloader' and press 'OK.'  This will restore the UEFI boot entries.

Cause

This can happen, for example, by loading the UEFI firmware default settings after installing SLES.
