SUSE Manager client registration of a SLES10 SP4 fails with Internal Server Error

This document (7005356) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

SUSE Manager 1.2
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 Service Pack 4

When trying to register a SLES10 SP4 server as a client to SUSE Manager it fails with the following error message:

* registering
Internal Server Error

*** Error: Registering the system failed.

On the server the following error can be seen:

SQL Error generated: (1, 'ORA-00001: unique constraint
(SUSEMANAGER.SYS_C006571) violated\\n', 'INSERT INTO suseServer (rhn_server_id,
guid, secret, ostarget_id) values (:sysid, :guid, :secret, (select id from
suseOSTarget where os = :ostarget))')

This can happen under two circumstances:

  1. the Client Tools are on an old patch level and haven't been updated recently. Both the client and server should be kept on a recent level, if possible
  2. the Server has been updated recently, but the database schema has not been updated after the new packages have been installed. If an update should make this necessary, it is always specified in the accompanying patch documentation. The schema can be updated in the following way:
    1. spacewalk-schema-upgrade
    2. spacewalk-service restart
