Various issues with Veritas cluster software on SLES

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 Service Pack 3
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 Service Pack 2
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 Service Pack 1
 

Situation

You are using Veritas cluster or file system software with SLES and see different issues like crashes, kernel oopses, file system going read-only or other unexpected behavior.

In /var/log/boot.msg you find the following messages or similar::

vxdmp: module not supported by SUSE, setting U taint flag.
vxdmp: Loading module compiled for kernel version 2.6.16.60-0.21-smp into kernel version 2.6.16.60-0.42.7-smp
vxio: module not supported by SUSE, setting U taint flag.
vxio: Loading module compiled for kernel version 2.6.16.60-0.21-smp into kernel version 2.6.16.60-0.42.7-smp
vxspec: module not supported by SUSE, setting U taint flag.
vxspec: Loading module compiled for kernel version 2.6.16.60-0.21-smp into kernel version 2.6.16.60-0.42.7-smp

Resolution

Install the appropriate kernel modules in the version for the running kernel or revert to the appropriate kernel for the modules that are provided for Veritas.
If the problem persists, please contact both our and Veritas support, if the observed issues occur on the Veritas shares.
