Including latest patches on first SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 installation stage

This document (7005169) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

For your system installation you need an update package that is not included on
the installation medium.
Without this update package your system cannot boot into the second
installation stage.

Situation

In SLES10 you can include the update repository as addon medium in the first
installation stage.
This makes sure that you directly install the latest update packages, instead
of older ones from the installation medium.

Resolution

In order to include the update repository as addon medium, you need to create a
local update mirror that doesn't require identification.
You can do that for example by setting up a SLES11 machine that uses SMT to for
local update mirroring.

For details, please refer to the SMT documentation at:

https://www.novell.com/documentation/sles10/sle10_sp2_smt_guide/data/bookinfo.html

There might be some environments where you cannot use SMT or where you cannot
use a SLES11 as local update server.
In this case, it is also possible to create a custom update repository that
contains only the packages to finish the installation.
This can be done by using the scripts from the package inst-source-utils.
A detailed description of the scripts and a usage example is available at:

http://en.opensuse.org/Inst-source-utils

After installing the update server, you need to configure it as addon medium
during the installation.
This can be done by klicking the checkbox: "Include addon medium" in the
Installation Mode  window:

In the following Add-On Product Media dialog window, specify the URL to the

update server, e.g.:

You need to replace $UPDATESERVER with the ip address of your update server.

You can also specify it as addon medium in your autoyast installation, e.g.:

  <add-on>
    <add_on_products config:type="list">
      <listentry>
        <media_url>http://$UPDATESERVER/repo/full/$RCE/SLES10-SP3-Updates/sles-10-i586/</media_url>
        <product>Updates</product>
        <product_dir>/</product_dir>
      </listentry>
    </add_on_products>
  </add-on>
