SAN or Disk devices are unexpectedly automounting on SLES 11 and SLES 10 SP3

This document (7004675) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 11
SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 Service Pack 3
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 Service Pack 3

Situation

After updating to SLES/SLED 11 or SLES/SLED SP3 any attached device may unexpectedly begin auto mounting when the GNOME or KDE  GUI environment loads.

This may include local disks or even LUNS that are visible to the server or desktop.

Resolution

Apply current updates as of Feb 11, 2011.

Additional Information

As a work-around, either disable the haldaemon service via chkconfig or disable automounting in the Nautilus application.

To disable using chkconfig:

sudo /sbin/chkconfig haldaemon off

To disable automounting in the Nautilus application:

  1. Launch the GNOME Configuration Editor (run "gconf-editor" from a terminal window)
  2. Select apps > nautilus > preferences
  3. Uncheck media_automount
If the option is not present within the GNOME Configuration Editor it can be manually defined either via the editor or from the command line with the following command:

/opt/gnome/bin/gconftool-2 --type bool --set /apps/nautilus/preferences/media_automount false

After running the command the option will show up in the GNOME Configuration Editor.
