Unable to set ACL's on ReiserFS while Sophos Anti-Virus is loaded

This document (7000431) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

Novell Open Workgroup Suite
Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10
Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10
Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9
Sophos Anti-Virus 6.X products

Situation

Systems where Sophos anti-virus products are loaded are unable to set file system ACL's.

Resolution

On systems running Sophos anti-virus, the following has been observed:
  • With Sophos kernel modules loaded, file systems created with out Sophos loaded cannot create ACLs on file systems with out at least one ACL.
  • With Sophos kenerl modules loaded, file systems created with Sophos loaded cannot create ACL's on file systems with out at least one ACL.
  • With out Sophos kernel modules loaded, file systems created with Sophos loaded cannot create ACL's on file systems with out at least one ACL
  • With out Sohpos kernel modules loaded, file systems created with out Sophos loaded can create ACL's.
To work around this issue, Novell recommends that you create all your file systems with out Sophos loaded. Further, create at least one ACL on your file systems. Otherwise, you will need to disable the Sophos services, reboot and then set the ACL's on the file systems. Any filesystem created with Sophos installed will have to be recreated.

This problem is caused by Sophos kernel hooks and it has been reported to Sophos.
