SLP: Scope list not supported (4)

This document (3491826) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

Novell Service Location Protocol (SLP) Novell SLP Directory Agent (SLPDA.NLM)
Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9
Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10

Situation

openSLP can't register services with Netware DA.
Lan trace shows: "Error Code: Scope list not supported (4)"
SCOPE_NOT_SUPPORTED

Resolution

Ethereal and wireshark translate the error "SCOPE_NOT_SUPPORTED" as"Error Code: Scope list not supported (4)".

One thing that can cause this error is if you have option names in the incorrect case in the slp.conf file.
To reproduce the error, use:
net.slp.usescopes = MYSCOPE
instead of:
net.slp.useScopes = MYSCOPE

In this case it appears to be functioning as designed, as conf files in Linux are typically case sensitive.

This actual error is described in RFC 2614.
SCOPE_NOT_SUPPORTED = 4: The SLP message did not include a scope in
its supported by the SA or DA.
