sysctl -a hangs

This document (3293315) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9 (SLES9)
Novell Linux Desktop 9 (NLD9)

x86_64 architecture (AMD 64-bit or Intel EM64T)

Situation

sysctlis used to check and modify kernel parameters at runtime. The parameters available are thoselisted under/proc/sys/and the proc filesystem is required for sysctl support in Linux.

Some applications like SAP and Oracle call "/sbin/sysctl -a" which will hang on kernel 2.6.5-7.276-smp, because of an issue with the toss_page_cache_nodes entry in /proc.

Resolution

Update the kernel.

This issue is fixed as of kernel 2.6.5-7.282 and a fixed kernel is included in SLES9 Service Pack 4 and NLD9 Service Pack 4.
