Installation of SLES9 SP3 on HP ProLiant™ DL585 2.6 GHz Dual Core

This document (3292748) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Hardware: Hewlett Packard ProLiant™ DL585 2.6 GHz Dual Core
Software:Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9 Service Pack 3
Kernel: 32 or 64 bit Multiprocessor Kernel version 2.6.4-7.244 (from SP3)
Certification Information: YES bulletin 83618

The certification document shows the HP DL585 Dual Core as certified for SLES9 SP3 but installation fails during the first reboot on accessing the integrated SmartArray storage controller.

Boot the installed system with the installation medium and install a newer kernel (at least version 2.6.5-7.257).

Additional Information

The root cause is a problem in the kernel's IRQ sharing routine on 64 bit dual core machines. Theccissdriver hangs on accessing the Smart Array controller.
A fix for this issue is included in the 2.6.5-7.257 and newer kernels.

Booting the installed system with the installation medium is successful because the installation medium uses a single processor kernel which does not trigger the issue.
