Migrating Data From NetWare and Windows to Novell Open Workgroup Suite Small Business Edition

This document (3219860) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Novell Open Workgroup Suite Small Business Edition (NOWS)

For those wishing to migrate data from their NetWare or Windows environment to NOWS.

NetWare to NOWS-SBE

The NOWS-SBE server allows you to create NCP Volumes on linux file systems (NSS volumes are not available). This example provides the suggested method for migrating data from a traditional NetWare server to a NOWS-SBE linux server.

  • When installing/configuring eDirectory on your NOWS-SBE server, chose the Advanced-New Tree option and be sure to select the box for NCP Volume support

  • Create a target Volume on the NOWS-SBE server (for this example, the volume will be called DATA)

    • On the NOWS-Server Open a Terminal window by right-clicking on the desktop and selectingOpen Terminal

    • Create or select a folder/directory where the Volume's data will be stored (mount point). For example: /data or /var/novell/data

    • Enterncpcon create volume data /data(depending on the location you chose). Use ncpcon help for assistance using ncpcon.

    • Use iManager or ConsoleOne to verify that the Volume object was added to eDirectory

  • Install the Novell NCP Client on a Windows client (the Novell NCP Client will soon be available for SLED 10 SP1from

    • The Windows client is available from the NOWS-SBE Web Administration tool underProducts and Services>eDirectoryor fromDesktop Downloads

    • The Windows client will unzip into the C:\Novell\Novell Client 4.91 SP3 English directory by default

    • Locate and runsetupnw.exein this directory to install the client

  • Connect to the NetWare 6.5 Server (source Volume)

    • Right-click on the red N in the System Tray and selectNovell Login.

    • Authenticate to your NetWare 6.5 server as a user with sufficient rights (such as admin)

  • Connect to the NOWS-SBE Server (target Volume)

    • Right-click on the red N in the System Tray and selectNovell Login.

    • Authenticate to your NOWS-SBE server as a user with sufficient rights (such as admin)

  • Copy the files using the Novell File Copy Utility

    • Right-click on the red N in the System Tray and selectNovell Utilities >Novell Copy.

    • Browse toselect the path to the source DATA volume on the NetWare 6.5 server

    • SelectOK

    • Browse to select the path to the target DATA volume on the NOWS-SBE server

    • ChooseFile Copy Optionsas appropriate (For example,Keep attributes on copyandCopy subdirectorieswould be recommended options)

    • SelectOKto begin the file copy (migration)

It is important to note that Linux file rights do not correlate directly with NFS file rights. This method of copying the files will preserve as many attributes as possible.
For more information on the specific rights on NetWare and OES servers, see"File Services” ( the Novell OES Planning and Implementation Guide.

For additional information on file system attributes, see theFile Systems Management Guide forOES (

Windows to NOWS-SBE

  • See section"10.0 Windows File and Print Sharing”of the NOWS documentation for information on this process

    • Prerequisites

      • Windows Server:
Verify that the files that you wish to migrate are shared.

      • NOWS-SBE Server
Create a directory where you wish to migrate/copy files
Login to the server as root
        Open a terminal
        Create a directory using mkdir
Change the owner and the group to the appropriate using chown, chgrp
Verify the file permissions are set appropriately

      • Edit the /etc/samba/smb.conf to "share” the directory

Example addition to smb.conf

comment = sql user share
path = /var/sql
read only = no

# name is required
# this field is optional
# the path to the directory you created with mkdir
# this sets the directory as read/write

    • After the change you'll need to restart samba to have it acknowledge the changes:
      /etc/init.d/smb restart

  • From a Windows workstation map 2 drives; one to the windows server that you are migrating files from and one to the newly created Novell Small Business Server
    • Map a drive to the Windows Server
For example on Windows XP: Select start / run / open"//winserver/share”

    • Map a drive to the NOWS-SBE Server ( as the user who will take owner ship of the files.)
For example select start / run / open"//nows/share”

  • Copy the file structure over to the new server.

  • Verify the rights are assigned appropriately
