Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10


Playing multimedia files on the desktop (ie using Kaffiene, Gnome Multimedia, KDE Multimedia, xine, etc.)  does not function. 


The codecs (the software modules that enable the use of compression for digital video) required for DVD playback (specifically the commercial DVD's), mpeg files, MP3 files, wmv files, DIVX, and quicktime video are all proprietary. As of the SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 product release, Novell did not have the necessary rights to distribute the codecs, which means that the functionality is currently unsupported.

Novell is aiming at providing better support of multimedia content playback on Linux and is working closely with its technology partners on this issue.

Additional Information

Unfortunately, there are legal ramifications to listing sources of codecs that have not had licenses procured for the use of patented code. As a result, this document will not list sources of codecs.

The codec term arises from compression/decompression - terms typically applied to audio or video streams or data. Some codecs function using custom and/or patented procedures, and must be licensed from the patent holder. Many audio or video streams utilize these patented procedures.
