"No Hard Disks or Disk Controllers Found" message with large amount of DASDs

Environment

Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9 for IBM S/390 and IBM zSeries
Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9 for IBM zSeries
Installation in LPAR with more than 2000 DASDs attached.

Situation

Despite having activated, formatted and partitioned the DASDs to install the SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9 on an IBM S/390 or System z LPAR, the installation system complains about no hard disk controllers or disks being available. The LPAR has more than 2000 DASDs attached.

Resolution

Reconfigure the LPAR to only attach the DASDs needed for the installed Linux system.

Additional Information

The Initial RAM Disk (initrd) creates a temporary file system in memory (tmpfs), in which it loads the installation system. The created file system has a limited number of directory entries (10240 inodes.) In case a large amount of DASDs is available, the installation system will create four device node entries in /dev for each disk. After about 2000 disks, no further directory entries can be created and the installation system cannot create files necessary for installation anymore.
