Tape backups no longer work after patch update from channel No TSAs found

This document (3092669) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

Novell Open Enterprise Server (Linux based)
Tape backup
Novell Linux cluster

Situation

Customer was using the Syncsort tape backup solution. They could attach to the Linux cluster they were trying to backup and could browse the directories and files fine. Once the selections were made and the backup was started, Syncsort would return a message saying that the cluster resource was down, and abort the backup. The Syncsort troubleshooting tool, cltest, showed that the Linux API Syncsort was using to get information about the cluster resources, NCSFindResource() was returning error 12. With output similar to this:
Vol Name: CO
Mon Aug 6 09:31:57 2007 SNBIFL3066D volName = CO
Mon Aug 6 09:31:57 2007 SNBIFL3066D get_symbol_fp:
Mon Aug 6 09:31:57 2007 SNBIFL3066D get_symbol_fp: fp for (NCS_FindResource) is (0x402AFA44)
Mon Aug 6 09:31:57 2007 SNBIFL3066D nw_cl_find_smdr_by_vol: NCS_FindResource failed, ret = 12
error in findSMDRByVolume(), ret (-1)
This would result in a smdr connection failure message in the tape software. The Novell utility, tsatest, reported:
No TSAs found
This would happen when tsatest was used with the clustering option, such as in the following command:
tastest --cluster --err tsaerror.log --path /media/nss/CO
The data could still be backed up by accessing the physical Linux nodes in the tape software and not using the clustering functionality. It was only if the backup attempted to use the clustering features of SMS did the problem occur.

Resolution

The problem was with the Novell Linux clustering sdk module:
08/14/2007 01:51 PM 50,619 libncssdk.so.1.0.0
This file is copied into /usr/lib. Be sure to rename the one that's there to preserve it. This file is available from Novell support until it's put out onto the OES channel. This problem could happen to any tape backup software although the symtpoms may be different than what was seen with Syncsort.
