Setting MTU on ibmveth-NIC larger than 2000 Bytes not possible on a pSeries server

Environment

Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10

Situation

Setting MTU on ibmveth-NIC larger than 2000 bytes is not possible on a pSeries server

Example:
ifconfig eth0 mtu 9000
SIOCSIFMTU: Invalid argument

Resolution

Enable the setting /sys/class/net/eth0/device/pool2/active in the following
way in order to be able to use MTUs larger than 2000:
echo 1 >/sys/class/net/eth0/device/pool2/active
ifconfig eth0 mtu 9000
