SLED10 : Setting up Printers

This document (3058875) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10

Situation

This document identifies where to set up printers in SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10.

Resolution

There are two methods for setting up printers. The first method covers all supported printers, including setting up iPrint. The second method is specifically for iPrint and is much more simple, as most of the information supplied does not have to be looked up to the extent that the first method requires.

The general method for accessing the printers :
  1. Click on "Computer" at the bottom of the screen.
  2. Click on "Control Center".
  3. In the "Hardware" section, click on "Printers".
  4. Double click on "New Printer".
  5. If you are prompted for the root password, provide this.
  6. Follow the wizard for the specific printer that is being set up.
To set up an iPrint printer :
  1. Open the web browser.
  2. Point it to the iPrint server (e.g. https://printertest.novell.com/ipp).
  3. Click to install the iPrint client, and save the RPM.
  4. "su" to root.
  5. Install the RPM package using "rpm -i novell-iprint-xclient.i586.rpm".
  6. Restart the web browser. This forces FireFox to reload any plug ins, including the new iPrint package.
  7. Point the web browser back to the iPrint server page (the same page used in step 2).
  8. Click to install the printer itself.
If there is trouble, please consult the documentation regarding printing, as this will contain more specific information about what can be used to set up printers. There is also an iPrint client section should that be required.

Additional Information

The second method described in the resolution actually creates a printers.conf in /etc/cupsd/ . An example of this file is listed here :
