Blank screen while launching installer on ICP GDT RAID host bus adapter

This document (3008712) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10
Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10

Right after selecting the installation mode in the first installation menu the machine locks up with a blank screen and a blinking cursor in the upper right corner.
No error messages are displayed on the console.
No option to switch to any of the virtual consoles.
Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9 can be installed without any issues on the same hardware.

As a workaround disable the ICP GDT Raid controllers BIOS for the initial installation.
To do so press the key right after the keybord has been initialized.

The BIOS can be switched on again after the installation to be able to boot from a drive attached to the ICP GDT HBA.

Applying a firmware update for the RAID HBA should fix this issue.
