Build of image fails in SUSE Manager Server although it is built correctly in build host

This document (000021073) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Manager 4.3 Server

Situation

Building of images using SUSE Manager Server works correctly on top of build host system (the image is properly built, can be downloaded from the build host and successfully booted), however, it fails in SUSE Manager Server with a generic message: "Build failed, please check the server log"

Resolution

Use a three-part numerical value within the image template for "version" instead of a two-part numerical value:
<preferences profiles="RaspberryPi">
    <version>15.4.0</version>
    <packagemanager>zypper</packagemanager>

Cause

This is caused by a miscommunication between SUSE Manager Server and Kiwi. Kiwi specifies that image version must be a three-part numerical value and this is being taken as a requirement. kiwi_info module expects a three-part "version", however in the "problematic" template there is only:
<preferences profiles="RaspberryPi">
    <version>15.4</version>
    <packagemanager>zypper</packagemanager>
