Installation of SLES 15 SP3 on eMMC media shows an exit code: 5 error when saving the bootloader

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 15 SP3


When installing SLES 15 SP3 on an eMMC device, YaST2 will show an popup error when finishing the bootloader installation:

Execution of command "[["/usr/sbin/shim-install", "--config-file=/boot/grub2/grub.cfg"]]" failed.
Exit code: 5
Error output: Installing for x86_64-efi platform.
Installation finished. No error reported.
Could not prepare Boot variable: Success

This error is also reported in /var/log/YaST2/y2log of the installation environment.


Please download the Quarterly Update 1 release of the SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 15 SP3 ISO from the SUSE Customer Center and use this for installation. It contains an update of libefivar1 to version 37-6.12.1 which contains the necessary fix to address this. 


A problem with parsing the sysfs settings for eMMC devices.
