How to shutdown an SAP Application Pacemaker Cluster

This document (000020267) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SLES for SAP Applications 12
SLES for SAP Applications 15

Situation

Assuming there is a Pacemaker Cluster that controls SAP Applications, which could be Netweaver or Hana, the Cluster can be used to stop the SAP Application while stopping the Cluster itself. Thus, making the system available for reboot or patching.

Resolution

On the Secondary Cluster node (ERS or the Secondary Hana), one would do

   crm cluster stop

once this is done, one would issue on the Primary

   crm cluster stop

And the SAP Application is stopped together with the cluster.

Cause

This approach has the advantage, that the Cluster is taking care of the SAP Application.

During the shutdown of the first node, the Cluster will stop or failover any primary, and during the shutdown of the second node, the Cluster will stop all SAP Applications.

During a later corresponding startup, the Cluster takes care of the start of the SAP applications.

By this, a complete layer of "it could go wrong" is eliminated.

Additional Information

The reverse process can be used to start the Cluster and the SAP Application.
