Note about plymouth version 0.9.5+git20190908+3abfab2-3.14.1

This document (000019853) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 15 SP2
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 15 SP1

Situation

The system was recently patched with plymouth-0.9.5+git20190908+3abfab2-3.14.1 version.
Two problems could be seen
  • boot process is not being displayed
  • login via hvc-console (POWER)  is not possible

Resolution

To fix the login issue disable plymouth on the serial console during boot.
This can be done with "plymouth.enable=0" added to the kernel command line.
Temporarily (once) by editing the command line in grub, permanently by adding plymouth.enable=0 to /etc/default/grub and recreate grub.cfg with grub2-mkconfig after.

Second option, downgrade plymouth to a lower version:

zypper in --oldpackage plymouth=0.9.4+git20190304.ed9f201-3.3.1 plymouth-dracut=0.9.4+git20190304.ed9f201-3.3.1 plymouth-scripts=0.9.4+git20190304.ed9f201-3.3.1

Note: a fix has been released in: plymouth-0.9.5+git20190908+3abfab2-3.17.1

Cause

A patch was released which disables logging on serial console.

Additional Information

Note: plymouth should not run on serial console.
