Kernel-bigmem for SAP HANA environments on ppc64

This document (7018408) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for SAP Applications 11 Service Pack 4 (ppc64)

Situation

You are running SAP HANA 1.0 on SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 SP4 (ppc64) or SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for SAP Applications 11 SP4 (ppc64) on IBM Power hardware with more than 1.5TB of main memory.

Resolution

SUSE provides a second kernel flavor (kernel-bigmem) on ppc64 allowing customers to run SAP HANA on IBM Power hardware with more than 1.5TB of main memory installed.

The new kernel-bigmen supports POWER hardware with any size of memory up to a maximum of 32TB for SAP HANA environments.

With the kernel-bigmem--3.0.101-108.7.1 update, released September 2017, support for the Virtual address space was extended to 128TB for SAP HANA on IBM Power.

There is no minimum memory limit apart from normal SLES recommendations for the kernel-bigmem.

The standard kernel-default is only certified for configurations up to 1.5TB and should be not used for larger installations.

The kernel-bigmem is only supported for SAP HANA environments when running SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for SAP Applications 11 SP4 (ppc64)

The kernel-bigmem is NOT supported when running the standard SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 SP4 4 (ppc64) or for workloads other than SAP HANA

A reboot of the system is necessary after installing the kernel-bigmem package. Please ensure that you have updated the boot loader configuration accordingly.

Due to the relationship between the number of CPUs and available memory in SAP HANA, the maximum number of CPUs supported by the kernel.bigmem has also been increased to 2048.

Please be aware:

IBM and SAP are currently conducting additional testing of this kernel and SUSE is updating this TID as soon as the kernel passed. For further information, please get in touch with your IBM or SAP representative.
