With multipath enabled swap is not activated

This document (7017499) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 Service Pack 1 (SLES 12 SP1)

Situation

Enabling or using multipath results in swap not being activated, messages similar to the following can be seen during boot or in /var/log/boot.log:

A start job is running for dev-sda1.device
A start job is running for dev-sda1.device (1min 30s / 1min 30s)
Dependency failed for /dev/sda1.
Dependency failed for Swap.

Resolution

The current workaround is to blacklist local devices by wwid instead of using devnode or device entries in the "/etc/multipath.conf" file.

Cause

The problem is introduced due to incorrect entries in the default "/usr/lib/udev/rules.d/56-multipath.rules" file.

Additional Information

To blacklist a local device if its wwid is "26353900f02796769" add the following blacklist section to the "/etc/multipath.conf" file:

blacklist {
      wwid "26353900f02796769"
}

For more information on the syntax see the "Blacklisting Non-Multipath Devices" section in the SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 online documentation.
