Encrypting a partition causes a system hang for indefinite time

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 4 (SLES 11 SP4)

Situation

A system is configured with a single disk with two partitions: one for / and a second one for encrypted /opt or /home. After providing the valid encryption password, the system hangs for an indefinite time.

Resolution

This issue is avoided by placing the encrypted partition on a separate disk.
