How to register lxc containers against SUSE Manager

This document (7014408) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 3 (SLES 11 SP3)
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 2 (SLES 11 SP2)
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 1 (SLES 11 SP1)

Situation

A lxc container is to be registered to a SUSE Manager system.

Registration however fails:

# /usr/sbin/rhnreg_ks --activationkey  enter_your_key --serverUrl suse_manager_instance
An unexpected OS error occurred: [Errno 2] No such file or directory: '/etc/products.d/baseproduct'

Resolution

With SUSE Manager 1.7 this is not supported!

However, registration can be done with a few tweaks

* a missing symlink to fix the errormessage above and
* removing the systemid as shown below (mandatory!):

# cd /etc/products.d/
# ln -s SUSE_SLES.prod baseproduct
# rm /etc/sysconfig/rhn/systemid

After these two steps registration succeeds.

Note: Make sure to remove the systemid file, if the systemid is identical to an already registered host, the lxc container would get registered instead of the original host.

Additional Information

A feature request for supporting lxc containers on SUSE Manager is in evaluation for the upcoming release 1.11
As of January 2014 it's neither accepted nor rejected yet.

This TID gets updated once there's a decision.
