Unable to start apache (98)Address already in use

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11


Starting apache fails, displaying failed and the following error:
Starting httpd2 (prefork) (98)Address already in use: make_sock: could not bind to address
no listening sockets available, shutting down
Unable to open logs
startproc: exit status of parent of /usr/sbin/httpd2-prefork: 1


  1. Edit /etc/apache2/listen.conf
  2. Remove any duplicate entries such as:
    Listen 443
    Listen 443
    Listen 80
    Listen 80
  3. Save and close the file.


Apache attempting to bind twice to the same port according to configuration.

Additional Information

Troubleshooting Steps:
  1. Nothing else listening on specified port:
    netstat -peanut | grep :443
  2. No ghost process running of apache:
    ps aux | grep -e apache -e http
