Attempting to create a mailing list in the Mailman admin web page generates an error

This document (7010322) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 Service Pack 4

Situation

After installing and configuring Mailman that comes with either SLES10 or SLES11, when you attempt to create a mailing list in the Mailman admin web page, you get an error.

Symptoms:
Error is :
"Bug in Mailman 2.1.7, we're sorry, we hit a bug! Please inform the webmaster
for this site of this problem. Printing of traceback and other system
information has been explicitly inhibited, but the webmaster can find this
information in the Mailman error logs"

Resolution

changing the ownership of a directory,
/var/lib/mailman/archives/private/ ,

When at a linux terminal as "root" at the above directory did a "chown -R wwwrun.www ./private" . Once this was done the error in this defect immediately went away.

Cause

The web server Apache2 (user wwwrun) used by the Mailman web admin portal did not have the needed rights to create the List, in the /var/lib/mailman/archives/private/ directory structure.

Additional Information

I have re-opened this defect so as to correct the install to change the owner of the /private/ directory to be "wwwrun" by default, to avoid future customer issues with this.
