After updating SLES11-SP1 no longer able to login - "error in service module"

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 1

Situation

After updating SLES11 SP1 to the latest updates the message: " error in service module " displays when attempting to login to the server and user is unable to do so.

Resolution

Reboot server.
On the boot options line of the grub menu enter the number 3 to boot into multi-user mode.
Once server is booted, login as root user.
Proceed to backrev the pam-modules package:

zypper in pam-modules-11-1.6.15
Select 1 to downgrade package

To return to the GUI:

init 5 && exit
