YaST does not run when accessing the system remotely through VNC

This document (7006548) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 11 (SLED 11)
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 (SLES 11)

The problem can happen with or without Support Pack 1 (SP1) installed.

Situation

Connection is established through VNC to the server or desktop system but when the icon is selected to run YaST nothing happens.

If "yast2" is executed directly from a terminal window the YaST Control Center will usually run but none of the selections will work.

Executing the yast2 command with the module to run (such as "yast2 sound") will normally work.

Resolution

Delete the file "/root/.Xauthority".

For some reason the /root/.Xauthority file has become corrupt.  Deleting the file will fix the problem.

Additional Information

One known problem that can corrupt the /root/.Xauthority file is if the option for "IPv6" is enabled or disabled in the Network settings.  This has been reported and will be corrected in a future update.
