Recommended DVD burning tool in SLE10

This document (7004548) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10

Situation

If you are using the cdrecord-dvd binary you may run into a situation where it does not support your DVD drive and modes properly. Cause: the DVD patch for the binary is a bit old in SLE10.

You may get a message similar to the following:

cdrecord-dvd: Found DVD media: using cdr_mdvd.
Using generic SCSI-3/mmc DVD-R(W) driver (mmc_mdvd).
Driver flags   : SWABAUDIO BURNFREE
Supported modes: PACKET SAO
Drive buf size : 1409024 = 1376 KB
FIFO size      : 4194304 = 4096 KB
cdrecord-dvd: Drive does not support TAO recording.
cdrecord-dvd: Illegal write mode for this drive.

When infact your drive does support TAO the DVD patch for cdrecord-dvd does not know or recognize that it does.

Resolution

The recommended tool for burning a DVD on SLE10 is growisofs.

Please use the following command to burn a DVD with growisofs:

growisofs -dvd-compat -Z /dev/dvd=some_file.iso

(some_file.iso is the path and file name to the ISO image you are burning)

Attention: You may have to change the device being used from /dev/dvd to whatever your system recognizes.
