Installing SLES 9 SP4 on HP Proliant DL385 G5 Quad Core server
This document (7002254) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.
The hardware is YES! certified for SLES 9 SP4 (http://developer.novell.com/yes/101194.htm), and there is an indication on the certification note that a higher version of the kernel is required than that in the original version of SP4. However it may not be obvious that this newer kernel needs to be installed before the second stage of the installation proceeds.
Manually, this can be done by booting into the rescue system, mounting the disk partitions and chrooting into the installed system.
Boot from the installation media, and choose "Rescue system".
Log in as root, and mount the root partition on /mnt and any other filesystems which are on separate partitions under /mnt (e.g. /mnt/boot or /mnt/var if these were configured as separate partitions during the first stage of the installation).
Mount /proc and /sys at /mnt/proc and /mnt/sys using the commands
mount --bind /proc /mnt/proc
mount --bind /sys /mnt/sys
Then issue the command
Now a newer kernel package can be copied onto the system and installed using rpm.
