This document (7001652) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 Support Pack 2

Situation

After updating the system to SP2 the reboot of the system hangs at grub's stage 1.5 if root is based on a XFS file system. Starting the system using the grub shell is not possible.

Resolution

Please update the package grub to version 0.97-16.22.2 or later via online update.

Additional Information

This issue is only affecting systems being updated via online update. Patching the server via CD/DVD did not show this behavior.

How to get the system back online

To get the system back online proceed as followed:

1. Boot from DVD
2. Select installation
3. For each module that needs to be loaded pass an insmod= option to the options line. If tg3 is necessary for network access, enter insmod=tg3
4. Press enter
5. Follow the installation.
6. At 'Installation Mode' screen select 'Other Options' and then 'Boot Installed System'
