CDROM drive not available on HP Proliant DL760

This document (3917117) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10

Situation

The CD-ROM drive is not available on a HP Proliant DL760 when trying to install SLES10.

The installation starts fine from CD, but as soon as the kernel is loaded the CD-ROM is not longer available. The reason is, that due to a BIOS bug, the serverworks module fails to initialize the IDE controller correctly.

Resolution

It is necessary to get two extra modules loaded for this particular controller. When an error message appears, switch to a textbased console by using the STRG-ALT-F2 key combination. Enter the following commands:

modprobe serverworks
modprobe ide-generic

Switch back to the graphical installer by using STRG-ALT-F7 and continue the installation.
