SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10

And AIX client is trying to NFS a SUSE Linux export. When trying to mount, it gets the error:
vmount: operation not permitted
LAN traces show that the mount request is actually succeeding. However, it is immediately followed up a 'Get FileSystem Info" call (procedure 19), which is failing with status 1, aka "not owner," aka "NFS3ERR_PERM". This normally means that the requester does not have permission to make the request. However, permissions are 777 and the AIX client is requesting as root, and has root access (no_root_squash).

AIX by default will allow and use high port numbers for NFS communication. Some systems, including Linux, reject this. Configure AIX to use the reserved ports for NFS communication with the following command:
nfso -p -o nfs_use_reserved_ports=1
This will take effect immediately, and also be written to the AIX system's permanent configuration.
