Remote Logging does not work during SLES/SLED 10 SP1 installation

This document (3732197) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 Service Pack 1
SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 Service Pack 1

Situation

Remote Logging does not work during the installation of SUSE Linux Enterprise Server/Desktop 10 Service Pack 1. Instead you see the following error message on the screen, just before YaST starts:
/usr/lib/YaST2/startup/common/logging.sh: line 29: /etc/YaST/log.conf: Read only filesystem
The cause of the issue is, that /etc/YaST2 is a symlink which points to a directory on a readonly filesystem.
This prevents the YaST logs to be sent to the remote loghost.

Resolution

This bug cannot be fixed easily, since this would need a redistribution of the installation image.

However, there is a workaround to solve the issue. Add the following paramters to the boot command line:
exec="rm /etc/YaST2; mkdir /etc/YaST2" loghost=
It is planned, that this bug will be fixed with the release of Service Pack 2.
