IBM Java plugin doesn't work with Firefox

This document (3575677) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10

Situation

After you have uninstalled Sun's Java and instead installed IBM's Java you try to use the Java plugin with Firefox. However it doesn't get registered and is therefore not listed as plugin under"about:plugins".

Resolution

The link for the plugin file is not set correctly.

Fix the link as user root with the following command:
ln -sf /usr/lib/jvm/java-1_5_0-ibm/jre/bin/libjavaplugin_oji.so /usr/lib/browser-plugins/javaplugin.so

After a restart of Firefox the Java plugin should be now available and work as expected.
