Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12

Situation

After upgrading the SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 Service Pack 3 kernel to kernel version 4.4.82-6.3.1 mounting the xfs filesystem fails. The following error is shown:
XFS (dasdb2): Mounting V5 Filesystem
XFS (dasdb2): Torn write (CRC failure) detected at log block 0x1650. Truncating
head block from 0x1660.
XFS (dasdb2): failed to locate log tail
XFS (dasdb2): log mount/recovery failed: error -74
XFS (dasdb2): log mount failed
[FAILED] Failed to mount /sysroot.
xfs_repair comes back clean.

The problem returned after updating to SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 Service Pack 3 kernel version 4.4.131-94.29.1.
This time the issue appears to be affecting s390x only.

Resolution

Customers using an XFS file system, especially root on XFS file system should update to kernel 4.4.82-6.9.1, skip kernel version 4.4.131-94.29.1 and update to kernel version 4.4.132-94.33.1

The kernel update version 4.4.82-6.9.1 released September/21 reverts a previously applied patch to fix the problem.

The kernel update version 4.4.132-94.33.1 released May/31 adds the patch to fix the second occurrence of the problem.
