crm_ipc_prepare: Message exceeds the configured ipc limit (PACEMAKER COROSYNC)

This document (7013215) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise High Availability Extension 11 Service Pack 3

Situation

Setting up a Cluster or upgrading an older SLES 11 openais cluster during cluster start messages like this might be observed

Sep  6 12:23:13 marooned crmd[14069]:   notice: crm_ipc_prepare: Message exceeds the configured ipc limit (51200 bytes), consider configuring PCMK_ipc_buffer to 140720 or higher to avoid compression overheads

these messages already explain the issue. The configured cluster cib is too big for the default IPC Buffer. The cluster will deal with this by compressing the cib and circumvent this issue. If however the compressed cib would ever be too big for the IPC Buffer then the cluster could encounter a real issue. Also with compression there is an overhead.

Resolution

To resolve this issue one can increase the IPC Buffer by creating and modifying the file

/etc/sysconfig/pacemaker

and adding

   export PCMK_ipc_buffer=204800

on all cluster nodes. Please keep in mind that the above setting of 204800 is just a suggestion and might be not sufficient on the cluster affected. It can be increased further. A restart of openais is necessary to make this change work.
