Java 32bit architecture x86_64 RPM for SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11

This document (7011716) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 2
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 1

Situation

With SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 (SLES10) a 32bit architecture Java RPM for x64_86 systems is available eg. java-1_6_0-ibm-32bit-1.6.0_sr12.0-0.10.1.x86_64.rpm,
this however is not the case with SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11.

Resolution

The 32bit architecture RPM is not needed with SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 and onwards, 32bit Java applications can be run with the current 64bit Java RPM's available for SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11.

Cause

When SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 x64_86 was released, no 64bit Java existed yet and the 32bit Java was required for web browser functionality.
With SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 there however is no need anymore to have a 32bit Java runtime environment.

Additional Information

The 32bit Java is not supported by SUSE on SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11.
