Installing SMT 11 on SLES 11 SP1 fails with dependency error

This document (7006095) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 SP1
Subscription Management Tool 1.1

Situation

When trying to install Subscription Management Tool (SMT) 1.1 on a SUSE Linux Enterprise (SLES) 11 Service Pack (SP) 1 server, the installation program run into a conflict like the following :

<- snip ->
nothing provides product(SUSE_SLE) = 11 needed by sle-smt-release-cd-11-1.2.x86_64

    [ ] do not install product:sle-smt-11-0.x86_64

    [ ] break sle-smt-release-cd by ignoring some of its dependencies
...
<- snap ->

Resolution

Although the user can choose to ignore the conflict and continue the installation, this is not recommended.
This is due to a problem in the installation metadata of SMT 11, which causes it to not install on SLES 11 SP1.

SUSE had created a remastered version of the SMT 1.1 ISO image that contains a fix which prevents this problem.

The product is not under General Support and the ISO image is not available for download anymore.
However the article is meant to be a reference in case someone is using the original ISO and sees the error.

Although the new ISO image files have the same name as the original, shipping versions, the MD5 verification checksums are different.
The MD5 checksums of the remastered images are :
SLE-11-SMT-GM-Media1.iso 083df7afc8aab2ca64b89f5441987b07
SLE-11-SMT-GM-Media2.iso 23bd35295bc43aa184f3d1815a7ebc86

For the records, the original versions of the images had the following :
SLE-11-SMT-GM-Media1.iso  42fff91e7f16784614ff4128522907cc
SLE-11-SMT-GM-Media2.iso  31322692792914fb23cb5e26f0859acf

These checksums can be computed with the md5sum command like this :
$ md5sum SLE-11-SMT-GM-Media*
083df7afc8aab2ca64b89f5441987b07  SLE-11-SMT-GM-Media1.iso
23bd35295bc43aa184f3d1815a7ebc86  SLE-11-SMT-GM-Media2.iso
If SMT is published through a SLES installation server, the source needs to be deleted and recreated from the new ISO image.
