Chapter 1. Purpose

SUSE Linux Enterprise Real Time Extension 11 Service Pack 1 is an affordable, integrated suite of robust open source real-time technologies that enable enterprises to implement solutions with controlled response times.

SUSE Linux Enterprise Real Time Extension 11 Service Pack 1 enables usage of SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 1 based technologies in environments where having control over latencies is a critical requirement.

Its open source license minimizes the risk of vendor lock-in, and its adherence to open standards encourages interoperability with industry standard tools and technologies.

In SUSE Linux Enterprise Real Time Extension 11 Service Pack 1 a number of improvements have been added, some of which are called out explicitly here. For the full list of changes and bugfixes, please refer to the change logs of the RPM packages.

Chapter 2. New Features

This section includes an overview of the major new features provided by SUSE Linux Enterprise Real Time Extension 11 Service Pack 1.

  • Kernel version has been updated to 2.6.33. This follows the latest development in the community-driven PREEMPT_RT project, as well as adds support for latest hardware.

  • NMI mitigation support has been enhanced and improved. This makes latencies controllable even in situations in which hardware/firmware-caused stalls are harming predictability of the overall system latencies.

  • OFED packages have been updated in order to provide most up-to-date fabric support.

Chapter 3. Changed Functionality in SUSE Linux Enterprise Real Time Extension 11 Service Pack 1

  • SUSE Linux Enterprise Real Time Extension 11 Service Pack 1 comes with sole support for the x86_64 architecture. x86_64 architecture allows operating system to use more than 4G of RAM natively without the latency penalties incured by PAE on 32bit systems.

Chapter 4. Deprecated Functionality in SUSE Linux Enterprise Real Time Extension 11 Service Pack 1

  • AppArmor support in SUSE Linux Enterprise Real Time Extension 11 Service Pack 1 has been discontinued.

  • ptpd (Precision Time protocol as defined by IEEE 1588 standard) support has been discontinued.

Chapter 5. Upgrade from Previous Versions

Direct upgrade from SUSE Linux Enterprise Real Time 10 Service Pack 3 is not supported. In order to upgrade, follow the following steps.

  1. Remove SUSE Linux Enterprise Real Time 10 Service Pack 3 Add-On from SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 Service Pack 3.

  2. Upgrade SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 Service Pack 3 to SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 1.

  3. Install SUSE Linux Enterprise Real Time Extension 11 Service Pack 1 Add-On.

Chapter 6. Known Issues in SUSE Linux Enterprise Real Time Extension 11 Service Pack 1

  • If SUSE Linux Enterprise Real Time Extension 11 Service Pack 1 Add-On is installed after installation of SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 1 is completed, the Real Time kernel is not set as the default one. Administrator needs to set the Real Time kernel as default in bootloader configuration manually. This issue is not present if SUSE Linux Enterprise Real Time Extension 11 Service Pack 1 Add-On is installed during SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 1 installation.

  • Setting the default kernel in boot loader proposal during SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 1 installation with SUSE Linux Enterprise Real Time Extension 11 Service Pack 1 Add-On has no effect. The Real Time kernel will be always selected as the default one.

  • Novell Customer Center Configuration YaST module may display SUSE Linux Enterprise Real Time Extension 11 Service Pack 1 as not registered when it is run again after the registration has been completed. This does not have any effect on the registration.
