Today, SUSE Linux announced SUSE Linux 8.0, the company's latest Linux operating system and applications package highlighting increased security, KDE 3 desktop, seamless installation and expanded multimedia capabilities for professional and private desktop and workstation users.

High Security

SUSE Linux 8.0 offers an array of security levels, including mouse click activation of SUSE Personal Firewall 2. In the event of theft, GNU Privacy Guard (GPG) encryption protects laptop and desktop data, allowing only authorized users to read e-mail stored within SUSE Linux. Version 8.0 integrates professional e-mail and data security concepts and advanced security technologies including OpenSSH, PAM, and IPsec.

3-steps Installation

Automated installation improves hardware detection, while SUSE system assistant, YaST2, detects existing Windows partitions, making suggestions for allocating hard disk space and software selection. A mouse click installs most peripheral devices and cards.

KDE 3 And KOffice

SUSE debuts with KDE 3, the latest graphical desktop for Linux. KDE 3, KOffice with KWord, KSpread, KPresenter and an illustration module, and the e-mail client, KMail, are highly stable products.

Multimedia: CD-writing and Games

SUSE Linux 8.0 enhances CD writing, viewing and editing videos and sound mixing with an editing studio and synthesizer. SUSE is first to present version 0.9 of Advanced Linux Sound Architecture (ALSA) in support of most professional and personal sound cards. Popular games such as "Vegastrike", "Racer", "FlightGear", and the adventure game, "Nethack Falconseye" are included.

SUSE Linux 8.0, using Kernel 2.4.18, more than 1200 drivers, XFree86 4.2 support of graphics cards and glibc 2.2.5 represents state-of-the-art Linux technology. In addition to numerous improvements in the areas of firewall configuration, ISDN, modem, and mail, YaST2 now comes with a new module for the activation of high-rate data transfer modes for hard disks (direct memory access). The latest central Linux tools include: web server Apache 1.3.23 and file and print server for Windows networks, Samba 2.2.3a. Basic system advantages such as memory protection, preemptive multitasking, optimized memory management, and excellent network properties enhance professional deployment and ambitious home use.
