SUSE Linux Enterprise Real Time 12 SP3 includes SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, a versatile server operating system for deploying highly available, enterprise-class IT services in mixed IT environments with best-of-breed performance and reduced risk.
SUSE Linux Enterprise Real Time 12 SP3 offers the following new features to enterprise customers who need to increase the predictability and the reliability of time-sensitive, business-critical applications:
More Efficient Virtualization
To support the use of virtualization to separate system components and to help with creating higher density systems, SUSE Linux Enterprise Real Time 12 SP1 supported guests for non-real time sensitive workloads and SP2 supported Docker containers and real time capabilities. In SP3, it further supports the real time sensitive workloads guests, which means that customers can install both RT and non-RT VM on a single machine. With proper system settings and application analysis, RT guest and Non-RT guest not only can co-exist but also not interfere or affect each other.
Real Time Enhancements
The latest stable 4.4 PREEMPT_RT kernel has been incorporated into the service pack. Support for Precision Time Protocol version 2 continues to be available. The SCHED_DEADLINE scheduling class is enabled as a Technology Preview (best-effort support). This scheduler predicts task scheduling based on application deadlines, which is particularly useful for real time workloads.
The kernel has inherited hardware enablement and new features of SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 SP3 kernel to allow customers to run workloads on new hardware platforms.
The LTTng tools package has been updated to version 2.7.1 and moved to the base SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 SP3 product. SUSE Linux Enterprise Real Time 12 SP3 carries kernel module packages needed for operation of LTTng. LTTng Userspace Tracing has been fully enabled in the product.
