IDC: Open Source Software: Choosing between community supported and commercially supported products
For as long as there has been commercially supported open source software, there has been a misconception about the relative costs and benefits associated with open source software support by a subscription. In other words: free software is not free. Realistically, free software requires substantial OPEX investment of human resources the quickly offsets any savings from avoiding subscription fees.
IDC believes that the advantages of subscription models is that they align costs with usage and provide a predictable pricing model: a great solution for IT departments that are overburdened and facing budget challenges.
