NFS transfers failing with RPC error 88 (ENOTSOCK)

This document (7010007) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 1

Situation

During NFSv4 client writes, those NFS transfers are failing with errno 88 (ENOTSOCK) errors.

If the NFSv4 client sends a request before connecting, or the old connection was broken/closed, ENOTSOCK will be returned, but the rpc client can't deal with ENOTSOCK and the write will fail.

Resolution

A patch to translate ENOTSOCK to ENOTCONN was included in the SUSE Linux Enterprise 11 SP1 kernel update 2.6.32.54-0.3.1.
