Distributed Replicated Block Device (DRBD) is a leading open source networked disk management tool, enabling you to build single partitions from multiple disks that mirror each other and make data highly available. You can also quickly restore your clustered services via its fast data resynchronization capabilities. DRBD mirrors the data from the active node of a high availability cluster to its standby node. DRBD supports both synchronous and asynchronous mirroring. In the event of an outage, DRBD automatically resynchronizes the temporarily unavailable node to the latest version of data, without interfering with the service that is running. Additionally, DRBD includes data compression algorithms that reduce replication times.

Minimum Hardware Requirements

  • Local installation: 512 MB RAM, 512 MB Swap recommended
  • 2 GB available disk space (more recommended, 8.5 GB for all patterns)
  • 16 GB for snapshot/rollback of the OS

Recommendations for specific uses

  • 512 MB to 4 GB RAM, at least 256 MB per CPU
  • 44 GB hard disk space, 16 GB for snapshot/rollback of the OS
  • Network interface (ethernet, wireless or modem)
  • Network redundancy
  • I/O fencing mechanism and possibly shared storage
  • For Xen virtual host server, at least 512 MB RAM for each virtual host server
  • For KVM virtual host server, KVM's limits are equal to those of SUSE Linux Enterprise Server
  • For Xen or KVM virtual machines, at least an additional 256 MB RAM for each virtual machine
  • For print servers, a relatively faster processor or additional processors to improve server-based printing
  • For web servers, additional RAM to improve caching, and additional processors to improve web application performance
  • For database servers, additional RAM to improve caching, and using multiple disks for parallel I/O
  • For file servers, additional memory and disks, or a Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks (RAID) system to improve I/O throughput
