Sybase and SUSE Linux AG forge technology alliance

November 18, 2002

Worldwide strategic agreement reached and concluded in Germany

Düsseldorf, Germany

Sybase Inc, a leading provider of integration solutions and high performance database management systems worldwide, and SUSE Linux AG, one of the top international providers of Open Source operating systems, have agreed to enter into a global technology partnership. The aim is to synchronize product planning and product features and to provide their combined customers with a consistent support base. Going forward, Sybase products will support the upcoming SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 8 powered by UnitedLinux as an additional platform. With this in mind, Sybase will certify some of its selected products accordingly.

"Sybase was one of the first software providers to support Linux. By means of this new technological partnership, we want to make it even easier for our customers to use this platform. We will thus help them to lower their Total Cost of Ownership in the IT sector even further," says Raj Nathan, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Sybase Enterprise Solution Division. The professional support of Linux's large-scale distributors has meant that the Open Source operating system has now become an efficient basis for operative applications in large businesses. "In SUSE we have found a partner that has achieved a leading market position in both Europe and the United States", remarks Nathan. In addition, SUSE plays a central role as open source technology leader and product integrator in UnitedLinux's initiative to establish a homogenous, global Linux distribution network for companies.

"We very much welcome the partnership with Sybase," says Boris Nalbach, CTO of SUSE Linux AG. "Sybase is the technological leader in key areas such as integration solutions, data storage systems and enterprise portals and also occupies a strong position in important industries, especially in the financial services and telecommunications sectors. This will help Linux to further penetrate into the enterprise business."
