smbclient - protocol negotiation failed: NT_STATUS_CONNECTION_DISCONNECTED

This document (000020299) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12

Situation

Trying to connect to windows server with smbclient but it is getting the following message.

# smbclient -L <windows server name> -U <user name>
protocol negotiation failed: NT_STATUS_CONNECTION_DISCONNECTED

Resolution

It says the protocol negotiation failed. Check which protocols are enabled on the Windows server. It could be the server cannot negotiate SMB2 protocols. CIFS and samba both negotiate SMB2 by default. Make sure if it works using the following command.

# smbclient -L <windows server name> -U <user name> -m SMB2
# smbclient -L <windows server name> -U <user name> -m SMB3

Cause

The likely cause would be the authentication method on Windows server.
