How to stop samba from updating DNS with interface information

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12

Situation

System has 2 interfaces, eth0 and eth1. It is desired that eth0 be used for samba functions, but not eth1. It is also desired that DNS not be dynamically updated with information about eth1. The /etc/samba/smb.conf has been set with:

[global]

interfaces = eth0

yet DNS is still being dynamically updated with information about the IP address of eth1.

Resolution

In /etc/samba/smb.conf, in addition to the interfaces parameter limiting to just one of the interfaces, also set "allow dns updates = disabled".

It might also be desired to manually insure that eth0 (the desired interface) is represented in DNS.

Alternative, not tested:

It may also be helpful to set:

bind interfaces only = yes

This might also impact whether "allow dns updates = disabled" is needed in this situation. But this has not been verified.
